Vibe Coding Gets You to the Door. The Last Mile Gets You Inside. Why speed is the wrong metric if quality isn't in the room. There’s a moment in every vibe-coded prototype where the demo looks incredible, the stakeholders are leaning forward, and someone in the room says: “How fast can we ship this?” That moment is a trap. I’ve been leading a complex initiative — consolidating a sprawling collection of legacy products into a single, unified experience built for agentic workflows.
We have PMs, UX designers, and engineers all in the room. Everyone is smart. Everyone is motivated. And AI tools have genuinely made the zero-to-one phase faster than anything I’ve seen in my career. But zero-to-one is not a product. It’s a sketch. The Seduction of the Prototype Vibe coding — the ability to spin up a working prototype through natural language, iteration, and AI assistance — has democratized the early phase of building. A PM can mock up a flow. A designer can generate a working component.
An engineer can scaffold an entire feature in an afternoon. This is genuinely remarkable, and I’m not here to diminish it. The problem is what happens next. When the prototype becomes the product, you inherit everything it was never designed to carry: edge cases it can’t handle, accessibility standards it never considered, security requirements it skipped over, and an architecture that was never meant to scale.
At a big tech company, you also inherit compliance obligations, data governance rules, and legal review cycles that a three-hour build session simply didn’t account for. You end up with something that looks finished but isn’t. And that gap — between the demo and the deployable — is what I call the last mile. The Last Mile Is Where Products Live or Die In the initiative I’m leading, our legacy products were each built at different times, by different teams, with different assumptions.
The zero-to-one phase helped us imagine something better quickly. But the last mile is where we’re spending most of our time, and rightfully so. It’s where UX moves from “functional” to “delightful and accessible.” It’s where engineering moves from “it works on my machine” to “it scales, it’s testable, and it won’t need a full rewrite in eighteen months.” It’s where PM moves from “we shipped a feature” to “we solved a problem completely.” Clean code isn’t perfectionism. It’s respect for the next engineer who has to touch it.
Pixel-perfect UX isn’t aesthetics. It’s the difference between a user trusting your product and abandoning it. And in an agentic world — where AI is executing multi-step workflows on behalf of users — the cost of an edge case bug is no longer a bad experience. It’s a wrong action taken autonomously. The stakes have changed. The bar has to rise with them. What This Means for How We Work Speed is a feature, but it’s not the only feature.
As the PM leading cross-functional teams through this kind of work, my job isn’t just to push velocity — it’s to protect quality at every gate. That means having the UX conversation before the build, not after. It means engineers raising architectural concerns in discovery, not during code review. It means compliance and security sitting at the table when requirements are written, not when we’re two days from launch. The teams that will win in the agentic era aren’t the ones who prototype fastest.
