banning of wikipedia editors grokipedia

In contrast to Elon Musk’s AI-fuelled encyclopaedia Grokipedia, Wikipedia has banned the use of AI for generating content. The decision was reportedly communicated to editors a week ago, but importantly, only seems to be targeting English Wikipedia. What’s more, this isn’t a total ban on the use of large language models. For example, Wikipedia editors can use LLMs to suggest basic copy edits and incorporate them, after reviewing the suggestions.

Wikipedia cautions editors to be aware of the changes suggested by LLMs as sometimes they can suggest a change that alters the entire meaning of a body of text. Editors can also use LLMs to translate articles from one language to another.

However, this also comes with a set of stipulations including: - The editor is skilled enough to confirm the translation is accurate, - The editor has checked for and removed AI hallucinations and content policy violations, - The sources in the original text have been checked and the translation reflects the sources fairly, - The editor complied with all the usual translation processes including terms of use-compliant attribution.

The reason for all these processes and rules is that Wikipedia has determined that the likes of ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek generate copy that violates several of its core content policies. “Some editors may have similar writing styles to LLMs. More evidence than just stylistic or linguistic signs is needed to justify sanctions, and it is best to consider the text’s compliance with core content policies and recent edits by the editor in question,” Wikipedia tells editors.

It’s interesting to see that while it’s not letting editors generate full articles using AI tools, Wikipedia isn’t banning them entirely. Granted, the most cutting edge technology out at the moment has been relegated to the role of proof reader but then again, AI is just meant to be a tool and not a replacement. We’d be curious to see whether Wikipedia’s stance on AI changes should LLMs become good enough to not violate its content policies.

As mentioned, Wikipedia’s policy stands in stark contrast to Grokipedia although, when the platform launched last year it was filled with Wikipedia articles it was attempting to pass it off as its own.
